Research

The research of the Computer and Network Achitectures laboratory encompasses three areas: traffic management, communication architectures and communication in systems of tiny devices.

Traffic management

In the traffic management area we conduct research to enhance the performance and utilization of the networks that the Internet builds on. Important topics are traffic characterization, performance optimization, network management and network monitoring.

Current projects in the area are Selfman (a CNS project) and Winternet. For more information see the traffic management web pages.

Communication architectures

Our research in the communication architectures area deals with issues that are related to how communication protocols and network interaction work together in an increasingly dynamic communication environment. Specific research issues are network architecture, multi-access systems, cross-layer issues, Voice-over-IP, handover between mobile and fixed infrastructure systems, ad hoc networking, power management in wireless networks, and delay tolerant networking (DTN).

Current projects in the area are Ambient Networks, RUNES, Winternet, and Nwarch (a CNS project.

Communication in systems of tiny devices

The research relating to communication for tiny devices is in the areas of wireless sensor networks and embedded communication. In particular, the focus is on challenged communication environments with potentially high delays and high bit error rates, and on how to connect the embedded networks with fixed IP network infrastructures.

Current projects in the area are RUNES and Embedded WiSeNts.
