Informative Art
SIGGRAPH 2001 For the SIGGRAPH 2001 conference in Los Angeles, Tobias Skog and Lars Erik Holmquist created the exhibition Informative Art in the Emerging Technologies section. It was designed to showcase how information displays can be incroporated into everyday settings, by taking inspiration from abstract visual art. The exhibition consisted of four different examples of informative art, running on separate laptops and projected on three screens simultaneously. We aimed to create a cozy, home-like environment to show how this type of information displays could be integrated in everyday life. The pieces The four examples of information art were (click on the images for a larger picture):
The installation We went to great lengths to create a unique environment in which to display the pieces. A couch and chairs was rented from legendary LA shop Loud & Cool; we found a shag carpet and a table at other local antiques dealers. The projection screens were not traditional screens but soft cloth (actually bedsheet, that had to be ironed!), creating a more intimate appearance. Here are a number of (clickable) images from the exhibition. The following pictures show the installation in strong light. Note the excellent green couch, which purely by accident happened to match the color of the motion painting! ![]() Below are a number of picture that show the various pieces running. It was very difficult to photograph them under the light conditions (low light + bright projection displays) so these images are a bit darker than the actual exhibit. Note how the Motion Painting matches the couch! ![]() ![]() Behind the scenes Here are a few pictures from the setup. Being totally unprofessional, we did not bring proper mounts for our projectors, but the folks at SIGGRAPH sent us off to Home Depot with a shopping list and built one for us! (far right) ![]() And this is how we felt when it all was over... ![]() Additional documentation The following paper was written and published based on the SIGGRAPH exhibition: Lars Erik Holmquist and Tobias Skog: Informative Art - Information Visualization in Everyday Environments.
