Semi-structured interviews were carried out on owners of rare pets. The questions in the interview aimed to establish:
- important qualities of a pet
- why they are interested in a rare pet
- what they do with their pet
- what the pets do
- how they see if a pet is sick or in different moods
- social interaction with other pet owners

Six male and four female subjects were interviewed. Three subjects were found through friends, one through Göteborg's herpetological association, and six through repti.net. The subjects were between 17 and 55 years (mean 25.6 years, median 22.5 years). Three interviews were made eye to eye, and seven by phone. The interviews were transcribed.

Once the interviews were transcribed, interesting data was cut out on post-it notes (see picture 1). The post-its were then sorted into an affinity diagram (see picture 2). After this, doublets were removed and the diagram structured further into four separate clusters of related features (see picture 3).

On the basis of the received clusters four personas were created and pictures of people that could express the characters were found at morgueFile
