T.R.
lived in the same industrial and telecom area as her university
department was. T.R.’s session with Sonic City took
place in this area during the night. As this was during the winter and
outside of the centre, the conditions were very cold with a lot of snow
on the sidewalks. The area in general was also very badly lit. T.R.
walked the same path as she usually does from home to her school,
through large open areas with very few buildings, and along motorways
with sparse traffic. Her walk was rather uneventful. The only urban
sounds to be heard around her were produced by cars, bells from a
tramway stops far away from her, and the crunching of the snow below
her feet. The music was a bit similar to dub: low-pitched, atmospheric
and loop-based, with a lot of echoes, and a metronome rhythm in the
background. She was passed by cars everyone now and then, the sound of
which made the music loops more complex. Crossing street did not have
an impact on the rhythm structure as it did with the other users. She
also passed by a couple of people and walked under a bridge, after
which the music got much quieter than in the beginning and then started
again. When passing by occasional street lamps, the pitch of the sounds
increased a little, which left traces in the music as loops echoed for
a few seconds.
