History in Brief

FID/II was established in 1961, first as a Study Committee, and later reorganized into a permanent FID Committee in 1967. The Committee was re-vitalized in 1976 after a thorough review of its objectives and working areas.

Before a forward-looking and active objective was defined in 1990, the goal of the Committee was "to establish an international professional forum for gathering, evaluating and exchanging ideas, methods and means on how to identify and how to meet effectively the need for knowledge (here understood as technical information) of the end-users in enterprises of any kind, any size and any statutory position within the private and the public sector".

Typical for the work of the Committe, such as it was and eventually will continue to be for the most part, is that it is based on personal contacts between information specialists and industrial executives. This makes it possible to advertize the impact of information and information management on business activities, on the role of knowledge and expertise in these activities, and on how an innovation-oriented working environment in which knowledge is transformed into results, may be created. The Committee therefore, is not contemplating distant, abstract goals. These goals are indeed based on a strong network of personal contacts which can promote internal and external change.
