Interactive Narratives 'Master Class'

– graduate course at DSV, Royal Institute of Technology

Examiner: Prof. Kristina Höök, DSV,  Royal Institute of Technology

Lecturers: Ruth Aylett, Carl Heath, Jarmo Laaksolahti, Nicolas Szilas.

The art and techniques for telling stories in interactive media have long been under debate. Story telling is an integral part of human culture, as is gaming, and in many electronic games the two forms of culture meet. But gaming and story telling are not the same thing, and recently many researchers as well as practitioners have developed interactive environments where story telling is the main objective, rather than gaming.

In this mini-course we will investigate different approaches to interactive storytelling, the role of characters and drama, as well as technology directed towards interactive story telling. The students will get an opportunity to meet some European experts on interactive drama, as well as experts in the area of construction of live role playing.

Course plan

The course is an intense three-day course and corresponds to 1 university point.  Day one is devoted to seminars by the invited experts. Day two, the students will work together in small teams with an assignment. The assignment will concern the construction and analysis of an interactive story by pen and paper, but there will be room for partially programmed solutions. Day three, the students will present their solutions which will be thoroughly evaluated and discussed with the expert panel.

Planned seminars:

Jarmo Laaksolahti: A history of computational narrative

Nicolas Szilas: The simulation of narrative

Ruth Aylett: Letting go - emergent narrative and interactive narrative

Carl Heath: Storyline and intrigue in live action role playing

Kristina Höök: The affective loop
