Phase 1 (Spring 1996 - Winter 1996)

This section provides information on the work that took place during phase one of the SVENSK project.

Liasons with Swedish Universities

Charlotta Berglund made a "SVENSK Tour" in May 1996, the purpose of which was to inform people at the universities in Linköping, Lund and Göteborg about the SVENSK project, to find out if, and for what, they would like to use a toolbox such as the one being developed in the project. The meetings consisted of half an hours presentation of the project, followed by a discussion. Those present were staff and PhD students at the Universities. The report from Charlotta's trip is available in html-format.

Selection of Language Engineering Platform

Mikael Eriksson investigated the alternatives when selecting a platform for SVENSK in August 1996. The report, which describes two platforms considered; ALEP and GATE, is available in html-format.

Technical Progress Report

By the time GATE version 1.0.0 was installed and running at SICS, Scott McGlashan and Mikael Eriksson put together a report on the technical progress of SVENSK. The report is available in html-format.

Phase 1 Deliverables (December 1996)

Phase 1 was concluded at the end of 1996. The main deliverable was the GATE system with integration of the SWETWOL/SWECG, unification-grammar parser and domain-specific semantics parser components. All components conform to the standard GATE input-output specifications. Testsuites will also be supplied for each component, together with performance results.

Since there already are a number of GATE documents produced by University of Sheffield, some of the SVENSK documents concerning integration should conform to this document set. The relevant GATE documents from University of Sheffield are available here. (NOTE that the current version of GATE by the time this deliverable was due was 1.0.3).

Five documents will be provided by Feb 28, 1997, the first two of which build upon the documentation of GATE.

System Manual
covering system requirements, system installation, architecture and interface definitions, using and extending component. [970206: Since the GATE System Manual still not is finished, this part of the SVENSK documentation will most likely be delayed, too.]
SVENSK Module Specification
Specification of the current set of SVENSK modules integrated in GATE.
Introduction to the Unification-based Grammar
giving an overview of the formalisms and providing examples of the treatment of the most important grammatical phenomena.
Full Description of the Unification-based Grammar
providing documentation for all the grammar rules and the built-in lexical entries.
Full description of the Domain-Specific Processor
including documentation of the interfaces to SWETWOL/SWECG, dependency grammar parsing approach, and semantic templates. The specific usage within SVENSK will be described in SVENSK Module Specification.
