The SVENSK Project is developing an integrated toolbox of language processing components and resources for Swedish. Priority has been given to developing the toolbox for teaching (such as student projects) and research projects where a natural language interface is required.

The SVENSK Project is divided into three phases, the first of which was covering the period from spring 1996 to the end of 1996, and the second from the beginning of 1997 to August 1997. The third phase is planned and funded for the period January 1998 to December 1999. SVENSK has been funded by the Swedish National Board for Industrial and Technical Development (Nutek) and SICS.

The toolbox is based on the GATE language engineering platform and will incorporate language processing tools developed at SICS or contributed by external sources. We are currently integrating nine components, e.g., tokenisers, pos-taggers and two parsers.
