The Models in CommonKADS

CommonKADS regards KBS development as continuous improvement of a set of models of various aspects of the KBS and its environment. The following is a brief description of the model set. A more detailed description is found in the Model Set Definition document. The models are presented here as describing the target situation, but they can also be used to describe the current situation, i.e. before introduction of KBS.

Organisation model: (Detailed spec. online)
Describes the organisation in which the KBS will be used.
Task model: (Detailed spec. online)
Describes the task assigned to the KBS, and related tasks in the organisation.
Agent model: (Detailed spec. online)
A high level description of the agents involved, e.g. the KBS, its users, and related computer systems.
Communication model: (Detailed spec. online)
Describes the interaction between the agents while accomplishing their tasks.
Expertise model: (Detailed spec. online)
Describes the knowledge used by the KBS to solve its task. A distinguishing feature of the expertise model support in CommonKADS is the use of a library of generic modelling components, e.g. task specific problem solving methods and domain ontologies.
Design model: (Detailed spec. online)
The link between the conceptual models (task, expertise, agent, communication) and the computer implementation. Describes the architecture and detailed functionality of the system to be implemented. (The implementation is not directly supported by CommonKADS, since it is very dependent on the particular implementation environment.)
