STATUTES
for the
Working Group for Learning Systems
and the
Swedish Learning Systems Society
Background
In Swedish industry, universities and technical institutes there is
an increasing interest for Artificial Neural Networks and Learning System
techniques. To meet a need for exchange of information, knowledge and experience
a working group for ANN was formed June 7 1991. As a first measure the
ANN working group took the initiative to establish SNNS, the Swedish Neural
Network Society. Since the start, the field has developed, and the area
of interests of SNNS has therefore been extended to cover nearby areas.
The working group changed it name to the Working Group for Learning
Systems, and at the annual meeting November 25th 1999 SNNS changed
it name to SSLS (Svenska Sällskapet för Lärande System)
- the Swedish Learning Systems Society.
Definition
An artificial neural net (ANN) is a network of a great number of simple,
summing processors working in parallel and communicating via modifiable,
weighted couplings. ANN-based techniques are, for example, used for adaptive
pattern recognition and guidance. The basic structure and function in ANN
is inspired by analogies with biological (neural) information processing.
The interests and activities of the working group and the Swedish Learning
Systems Society are centered around techniques closely related to ANNs,
that are useful for the same type of problems as ANNs. These techniques
usually take a statistical approach to a problem, and can learn from and
adapt to the environment. Such techniques will here be called Learning
Systems.
Examples
of Learning Systems are: Artificial Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms,
Fuzzy Logic, Inductive Logic Methods, Case Based Systems, and various methods
for statistical modelling.
Objectives
To increase the knowledge about Learning Systems in Swedish industry
so that these techniques will be applied early for purposes suitable for
them. The main focus is on solving real problems for which a Learning System
is more appropriate than a more conventional method. Effective use of Learning
Systems aims at improving the competitiveness of the Swedish trade and
industry.
Activities
The working group intends to:
- Uphold a contact net within the Learning Systems community, among other
through the committee itself and through the interest association SSLS,
the Swedish Learning Systems Society.
- When needed provide viewpoints and function as an advisory body and
reference group on matters concerning Swedish research and development.
- Encourage activities such as
- Disseminating knowledge about Learning Systems
- Uses of Learning Systems
- Development of applications
- Development of tools
- Research
- International contacts
- Cooperation between business and academic communities.
- Bridge the borders between different techniques and disciplines within
the Learning Systems area.
Examples of activities are:
- Organizing seminars with prominent representatives from the field
- Upholding an electronic conference net
- Spreading information in other ways, e g through articles and reports
- Organizing joint study visits
STATUTES
FOR THE WORKING GROUP FOR LEARNING SYSTEMS
§1 Participants
The working group consists of representatives for Swedish engineering industry
and technical institutes, universities and/or research institutes. The
intention is that a majority of its participants shall be from the industry.
The working group selects members upon recommendations.
§2 Officials
The working group appoints chairperson and secretary. They are appointed
for one calendar year at a time.
§3 Economy
The working group handles no economy. The participants put up their business
time and act as hosts, an honor circulating among the participants' organisations.
§4 Meetings
The working group meets about 5 times per year.
The working group organizes the SSLS annual meeting. This is preferably
done in connection with some conference or seminar.
STATUTES
FOR SSLS - THE SWEDISH LEARNING SYSTEMS SOCIETY
The Swedish Learning Systems
Society - SSLS - is an association of people interested in
Learning Systems. To become a member, an application for membership should
be sent to the Working Group for Learning Systems. Members
of SSLS is obliged to report address changes and intentions not to remain
a member.
The working group for Learning
Systems is the board of SSLS,
and has further these tasks:
- Arrange the SSLS annual meeting
- Distribute information in the area
of Learning Systems
- Organize seminars and conferences
- Maintains the list of members of
SSLS.
The SSLS annual meeting approves the board for one year at a time and proposes
changes in objectives and activities.
