Curriculum Vitae for
Annika Wærn
I am a
senior researcher in the Interaction lab at SICS. I headed the HUMLE lab for
many years but left in 2000 to work with Gamefederation AB, a small startup
company in Stockholm. For about three years, I was the CTO of
Gamefederation, but came back to SICS in 2003 to initiate a new cross-lab
research theme on games, the Gametheme.
I head the IPerG project on
pervasive gaming and the recently started KARMA project on therapeutic tools
for treatment of eating disorders.
I originally joined SICS in
1986, after completing my Ms.Sc. of Computer Science at Uppsala University. My original field of research was
semantics and analysis of logic programs. Around 1990, I switched area
entirely, and moved over to research in intelligent human-computer interaction,
initially within an application project aimed at Route Guidance. I got my Tech.
Lic in 1992, on a thesis named "Planning and reasoning strategies in Route
Guidance", where I put forward a mechanism for reactive abductive
reasoning. I got my Ph.D. in May 1996 for a thesis named "Recognising
Human Plans: Issues for Plan Recognition in Human - Computer Interaction". After my thesis work and up to 2000, I
continued to work in the area of adaptive, social and mobile information
services. A key issue was the development of open architectures for such
services explored in the sView project. After 2000, I have studied mainly
gaming and leisure applications of distributed technology and intelligent
interface techniques. My research focus lies on ‘end-user
co-construction’, including both technology and design elements that
enhance end user involvement in the creation of a game experience.
HUMLE has always been a
cross-disciplinary research lab. I have had the advantage of working with
cross-disciplinary projects that encompass both computer science, psychology,
and the humanities, in particular media science. I have also participated and
headed numerous research projects during my years at SICS, both national and EU
projects.
