Ph.D. in Man-Machine Interaction 2005, Stockholm University.
Ph.Lic. in Computer and Systems Sciences from Stockholm University, 1995.
Appointments
Employed at SICS since 1997.
Dept. of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University, 1985-1998.
Entrepreneurial achievements
During her years at Stockholm University, Åsa was part of the Machine
Learning research group that was formed in 1985. In her licentiate
thesis work, she investigated the application of machine learning to
real-world problems. The majority of the applications in the study
used machine learning in the knowledge acquisition phase of the system
development process. An important issue in solving real-world problems
turned out to be the integration of the learning system into an
existing environment of other systems. The study also indicated that
the availability of a large set of examples to learn from is crucial
to the success of applying machine learning to real-world problems.
For many years, Åsa has also been a much-appreciated teacher. She has
been involved in the development and implementation of courses in
e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Object Oriented Programming, and
Intelligent User Interfaces. In 1993, she was also part of the group
that developed the masters study program in computer and systems
sciences at the department of Computer and Systems Sciences.
At SICS, Åsa has participated in the following projects:
- PUSH concerned the development of an adaptive help system in the
telecommunications domain, investigating which methods for
automatic adaptation are appropriate for the domain.
- EdInfo investigated news ways of achieving filtered news
services, combining machine learning techniques with input from a
human editor.
- ConCall realized the EdInfo ideas in the domain of conference
calls.
- News Media in the year 2003 explored ways of maintaining and
improving the quality of news production in digital media.
- RIND, that investigated the application of recommender system
technology to the domain of configuration of complex products.
- Socifer, a joint project with Stena Line, that developed and
studied a prototypical social component to be run on Stena Line's
on-line ticket booking site.
Currently, Åsa is working on social computation within the project
Mobile and Social Services.
During the years 1990-1998, Åsa was a member of the board of the
Swedish AI Society, and a member of the board of the Centre for
Information Technology and Cognitive Sciences at Stockholm University
/ KTH, from the start in 1992 until 1999.
Other merits
Chairperson of the local labour union at SICS 2002-2004.

machine learning and user modeling: Learning about Users. Workshop
ML-4 at the 16 International Joint Conference of Artificial
Intelligence, IJCAI-99, August, Stockholm, Sweden. Together with
