An introduction to wireless sensor network programming using Contiki
10th July 2009, Siena, Italy
This page contains information and course material for the hands-on sensor networking course in Siena, Italy, given at 10th July 2009.
The course is a 1-day mini-course intended to provide an introduction to working with real sensor networks.
Closer to the course date, this page will provide details and course preparation instructions.
This course has, in different shapes, been given a number of times; see below for links and course material of previous course instances.
Although this particular course will be adapted to both the number of participants and their interests, the previous courses' material indicate the scope of this course.
Course objectives
This course provides a hands-on introduction to wireless sensor network programming in a state-of-the-art operating system and on real sensor hardware.
We use the Contiki operating system, a pioneering operating system for wireless sensors, and the first operating system to support IPv6 communication. The course introduces Contiki's architecture, programming abstractions, and communication primitives.
A significant part of the course is devoted to hands-on exercises: participants will learn how to sample sensors and download data via radio.
In the hands-on part of the course we use the Contiki shell application, which allows participants to rapidly prototype and test new sensor network applications.
This intensive course has been given on several occasions previously, both to experienced sensor network researchers and to beginners in the field.
