Magnus Boman defended his M Sc on multi-agent system formalisations in first order logic, in 1989. In 1993, he defended his Ph D on federated systems, in parallel with 75 per cent teaching duties at Stockholm University. In this time period, he also co-founded a start-up company selling decision analysis software. He got his docent degree in 1997, also at Stockholm University. In 2001, he became a professor in Intelligent Software Services at SCS/ICT/KTH. The inherent four-year cycle of the complex system that constitues Swedish academia can clearly be discerned.
In research, Boman today works in Massive Data Analytics. His interest in this fast evolving area grew out of his agent research in the first half of the 90s, which in the latter half of that decade grew into robotics and autonomous systems. In the early 00s, his research and teaching had network theory as a pivoting point, and it is the combination of network theory and big data analytics that guides his research today. Throughout the 00s and until today, Boman has had an interest in computational epidemiology. Modern epidemiology rests on network theory and big data analytics, and thus constitutes an application area for Massive Data Analytics.
