PETRA SUNDSTRÖM, PhD

I work as a researcher at The Mobile Life Centre at Stockholm University in Kista and at SICS, The Swedish Institute of Computer Science. My research interests lie within HCI (Human Computer Interaction), with a current focus on the digital as a design material. As it is not possible to touch or feel digital materials at any given moment, understanding properties and potentials of digital materials is a major challenge for design teams and management. Methods and tools are needed that enable designers and engineers to work with digital materials as a shared resource within design innovation. The novel Inspirational Bits approach, which I presented at this year's premier international interaction design and HCI conference (CHI 2011) is one such method.

My previous research lies within Affective Interaction and with a focus on how we need to work on changing the underlying model for communication that has been prevailing in HCI: the information transfer model. How we can and should design also for the emotional and physical and experiential aspects of communication. This is also the focus for my PhD thesis, Designing Affective Loop Experiences.
