Europe Code Week: IoT tutorial at SICS
Tutorial - Internet of Things Services for Homes and Cities
Participation is free, space is limited. Please register here.
This tutorial will give you some of the tools needed to create new Internet of Things services including knowledge about some of the protocols used - RESTful HTTP, MQTT, XMPP and a few of the existing sensor cloud services - Xively, IFFFT, and SICSthSense.
The tutorial starts with a short introduction to the IoT concepts, tools and technologies and after the first introduction the focus will be on hands-on labs. The hands-on labs show how to develop basic IoT services and get them to interact with local devices such as smart-plugs, LED-lamps and sensors. Focus on the labs is on connecting different existing devices with services using the protocols in the introduction part.
Finally we will, before ending the tutorial, start an IoT challenge with a focus on developing a new service of product within the smart city or smart home domain. The details of the challenge will be announced during the tutorial. The challenge will continue until early 2015 where a winner will be selected by a jury of experts within the IoT field.
The tutorial covers the case where an IoT device is already available for creating the IoT service. We will however have some documentation available for anyone who wants to do their own sensor or other IoT device using Contiki OS and uIP.
