Multicore Day 2017

Kista Science Tower, Stockholm | 29 november, kl 09.00 - 17.00

The 11th annual Multicore Day focuses on possible futures of parallel programming for multicores with new programming tools and new versions of old programming tools, adapting to new hardware. We will also learn about how hardware evolves for performance and energy-efficiency.

This year we will hear -- among other things -- about how Rust will make the future more safe, and how the recently developed Java 9 aims to do the same!

Multicore Day is part of RISE SICS Software Week 2017. Multicore Day is hosted by RISE SICS and
Tobias Wrigstad, Uppsala University.

Panel: Is the Multicore dead?
Moderated by Alexandra Jimborean, Uppsala University

  • Per Stenström, Chalmers University
  • Davide Rossi, University of Bologna, Italy
  • Johan Grönqvist, ARM, Lund
  • Stefanos Kaxiras, Uppsala University

This panel discussion will take you on a journey to the birth  present and future of multicore computing.
Why did we need multicores in the first place? Do we fully exploit the multicore platforms? Is software scalable?

How did the multicore platforms evolve? How did the community adapt?
What are the new hardware trends? Are accelerators friends or enemies of multicores?
How can software contribute to a better utilization of emerging platforms? What are the new challenges?
Where will the multicore be in 5 years from now and in the future?
Will the  multicore be replaced?
