TITLE: (E)valuating advanced technologies

WHEN: Sep 26 Mon, 13:00

WHERE: SICS, Knuth seminar room

ABSTRACT: This lecture will cover experience
and research results from two topics as follows. First, evaluation of semantic
search will be a focus. There an account on diversity of approaches on semantic
search will be given, followed up by a brief presentation of a particular
approach. This topic will be rounded off by evaluation frameworks derived from
a set of experiments conducted to test that particular semantic search
approach. Second, a more general framework for value assessment will be
presented. The framework has been developed for the petroleum industry to
valuate its effort in implementing Integrated Operations (IO). Where IO are
defined as integration of people, work processes and technology to make smarter
decisions and better execution. IO are enabled by the use of ubiquitous real
time data, collaborative techniques and multiple expertises across disciplines,
organizations and geographical locations. This framework takes a broader
perspective of technology evaluation considering its contextual usage in a

Strasunskas is a postdoc researcher at NTNU. He received his PhD in Information
Systems from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2006.
He has master degree from Vilnius University (2000). From 1997 to 2001 he was
employed by Kraft Foods International in Lithuania as finance analyst and was
responsible for financial control of major capital project and ERP system
implementation, later he became a key user of ERP system manufacturing module.
His main research interests include, but are not limited to quantitative and
qualitative evaluation of novel and traditional business models, intelligent
information retrieval, and ontology quality aspects, as well as deployment of
semantic technologies for information management. His publication list includes
over 40 articles in international refereed books, journals, conferences, and
workshops. He has been awarded for his contribution to science (best paper
awards at the BIS 2009 and WSKS 2008 conferences) and practice (award for an
outstanding performance at Kraft Foods International in 2001).
