Tor Björn Minde and Jonas Gustafsson have been invited speakers at the two largest datacenter and mission critical events worldwide. The USA based 7x24 Exchange conference took place in Florida and the Datacloud Europe conference in Monaco, both in June. The presentations were great opportunities for SICS Swedish ICT to market what we are trying to achieve with the datacenter research facility SICS ICE.

The main theme of his presentation was the national Swedish initiative by SICS to improve the datacenter technology research in Sweden. The fact that SICS ICE datacenter is supported by 60 industry partners, and the description of research themes were well received. A datacenter built by wood was the greatest surprise for the audience. The information about the SENDATE project on holistic datacenter automation was very much appreciated, and generated most questions.

The project SENDATE-EXTEND, in the Celtic plus program of EUREKA and co-funded by Vinnova, has been running for 3 months. The main industry partners Ericsson, ABB and Swegon are involved in many work packages, from cloud applications to datacenter automation. Netrounds, Arctoslabs, BnearIT, Metria and Eitech are also involved. The academic partners are KTH, Luleå University of Technology and SICS. A day of demonstrations, of the first results, is planned for November in Luleå.

The project is focusing on cross-layer management, automation, monitoring and orchestration in data centers. The project will take a holistic approach and make collected data from all levels in the datacenter stack available to other levels. Cooling equipment could for instance be enabled to control airflows using load balancing and server sensor data.
